Agencies That Help Homeless Get Grants

Los Angeles County organizations helping the homeless have been awarded $45 million in federal grants, officials at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said Monday.

The grants are part of a package of annual appropriations, timed for release during the Christmas season, that total $700 million nationwide this year. The money goes to agencies that provide services to homeless people, including training in job skills, substance abuse treatment and child care.

HUD also awarded $165 million in grants to homeless shelters, which came out of the budget for the 1998 fiscal year. The larger grant package counts against the 1977 fiscal year.

Last year, the agency awarded $675 million nationwide, with $39 million of that money going to L.A. County.

“Our grants will literally save the lives of homeless people and help them build new lives by getting jobs, becoming self-supporting and moving into permanent homes,” HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo said in a prepared statement at a Washington news conference.
