“As good of a job as we do in local law enforcement here, it’s never quite good enough for us. We have to keep working on making Ventura County a safer place. We have to start looking at trends and begin thinking not just about next year, but about what’s going to happen five, 10, 15 years down the line.”

AGE: 47

HOME: Thousand Oaks

PROFESSION: Chief deputy, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department

LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: The only announced candidate for sheriff in 1998, Brooks spent much of the past year lining up key endorsements, including support from retiring Sheriff Larry Carpenter, Ventura County Dist. Atty. Michael D. Bradbury and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputies Assn. A 24-year veteran of the force, Brooks runs the East County Sheriff’s Station, overseeing about half the Sheriff’s Department’s street patrols.

GOALS FOR 1998: Brooks wants to push more modernization within the department, putting computers into patrol cars, for example. Within the next six months, he plans to solidify his contacts with local elected officials and the communities the department serves to ensure a smooth transition in the event that he is elected to replace Sheriff Carpenter in the June primary.
