Leaking Gas Disrupts Rides at Disneyland

Disneyland workers shut down four rides for several hours Saturday after an employee smelled natural gas fumes from a construction site outside the park, company officials said.

The closure came during one of the most popular weekends at the amusement park, said spokesman Bob Deuel.

About 9 a.m., a gas-line rupture at the Santa Ana Freeway and Harbor Boulevard led Disneyland officials to close the monorail, the submarine, the steam train and the Autopia car ride, Deuel said.

The rides reopened by 1:30 p.m., after workers from the Southern California Gas Co. repaired the leak, he said.

“There was no evacuation. There was no safety issue,” Deuel said. “It was just done as a precaution.”

The incident also created a traffic jam, as authorities shut down the Harbor Boulevard intersection to make repairs, Deuel said.

The cause of the leak is under investigation, but Anaheim firefighters said they think workers building a block wall might have inadvertently damaged the gas line.
