NLRB to Seek Injunction Against Publisher

The National Labor Relations Board said it will seek a federal injunction ordering the publisher of Detroit’s two daily newspapers to immediately reinstate about 2,000 striking editorial, delivery and production workers at the Detroit News who walked off the job in July 1995. The decision is the latest labor board ruling to go against Detroit Newspapers Inc., publisher of the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News. An administrative law judge ruled June 20 that the company had violated federal labor law in the strike. National Labor Relations Board Chairman William Gould IV said the board voted unanimously to seek the court order. The papers have continued to publish, using hundreds of replacement workers. Detroit Newspapers oversees the combined business operations of the two newspapers. Arlington, Va.-based Gannett Co. owns the Detroit News, and Knight-Ridder Inc. in Miami owns the Free Press.
