Board to Interview Trustee Candidates

Share

The board of Saddleback Valley Unified School District will interview candidates tonight to fill the vacancy left when Trustee Bobbee Cline resigned last month.

The four-member panel will review applications and interview top candidates with the goal of appointing someone to serve the rest of Cline’s term, which ends in November 1998.

If a new board member is chosen at the meeting, registered voters in the district may petition within 30 days to hold a special election vacancy if they are not happy with the trustees’ choice. Such a petition would require about 1,700 signatures.

Board member Don Sedgwick said a special election would cost the school district as much as $141,000 from its general fund--money that could be used instead to buy three portable units to expand classroom space.

“We’re very much hoping to reach a consensus . . . to prevent the need for a special election,” Sedgwick said Monday. “That’s a major concern for us.”

Other district officials said Monday that 15 applications have gone out to board candidates.

The trustees meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the district office, 25631 Diseno Drive.
