Homeowner Concern Ends Day-Care Plan

Following complaints from homeowners, the City Council has reversed a decision to allow a day-care center for 80 children in a residential area.

The Planning Commission had ruled that the facility could open on residential property on East Commonwealth Avenue.

The council’s action came after nearby residents protested that a business would be out of place in their neighborhood of single-family homes.

Councilman F. Richard Jones sided with the residents, saying that no one cited a need for an additional nursery within the city. He said the city already has 56 licensed child-care centers.

The residents “do not want this to become commercial,” Jones said. “They fear commercial, and that sways me.”

The rest of the council agreed.
