Police Chief Announces Retirement at End of 1998

The police chief, who has held the position for 20 years, will be retiring from his job at the end of 1998.

Richard Propster, 51, who has worked for the Gardena Police Department for 31 years and was named chief in 1977, will remain with the department while City Manager Ken Landau decides how he will replace the Police Department’s top manager.

“He [Propster] has done an excellent job here for me,” Landau said Thursday.

The City Council this week approved a retirement package for the police chief, boosting his annual salary from $100,000 to $108,000 by the time he leaves. That means his retirement benefits will increase.

Propster said he hasn’t made any career plans.

“There’s a lot to do between now and then,” he said. “My primary goal in life is going to be spending as much time as I can with my grandchildren.”
