Report Says Tourism Making Key Gains

The economic impact of tourism in Pasadena is on the rise, a report released by the board of the city-owned Civic Auditorium shows.

In 1996, tourists spent $387 million, an increase of 5.7% from the previous year, according to the report for the Pasadena Operating Co., which oversees the Pasadena Convention and Visitors Bureau. Hotel occupancy was up by 2.7%, the report said.

The report by PFK Consulting also suggests the tourism industry in 1996 supported 4,727 jobs locally, a rise of 6.5% over 1995.

“This study affirms the enormous significance the local hospitality industry and visitors it attracts have on Pasadena’s burgeoning economy,” said Roger Smith, CEO of the operating company.

The Pasadena Center, which includes the Civic Auditorium and convention halls is booked to capacity for 1997, Smith said.
