Vargas’ Goal Leads to Shootout and Mutiny Victory Over Clash

Nelson Vargas, Martin Vasquez, Alan Prampin, Ivan McKinley and Roy Lassiter scored shootout goals to give the Tampa Bay Mutiny a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Clash on Sunday before 12,771 at San Jose.

Vargas tied the score in the final minute on a free kick. Tampa Bay’s Giuseppe Galderisi opened the scoring in the 31st minute, Eddie Lewis tied it in the 56th, and Ronald Cerritos put the Mutiny back in front in the 69th.

Tampa Bay is 10-9, San Jose 7-12.

Dallas 2, Columbus 1--Jorge Flores scored the winning goal in the final minute of the first half and the Burn won before 12,329 at Columbus, Ohio.

Brian McBride headed in Brian Maisonneuve’s corner kick in the 18th minute for Columbus (7-10), and Wade Webber tied it for Dallas (10-9) in the 20th minute.

New York/New Jersey 4, Colorado 1--Antony De Avila and Tab Ramos each scored two goals as the MetroStars broke a five-game losing streak with a victory before 14,484 at East Rutherford, N.J.

The MetroStars (6-10) moved within a point of fourth-place Columbus in the Eastern Conference. Sean Henderson scored for the Rapids (9-10).
