Los Angeles police shot and injured a man early Monday morning after he drew a handgun from his waistband, authorities said.

While checking on a domestic violence call in the 6700 block of Woodley Avenue about 2:30 a.m., police encountered four men who appeared drunk.

When the officers ordered the men into a nearby alley, one of them, Cruz Hernandez, 26, remained behind. Police said Hernandez refused to follow their commands and fingered the handle of a .38-caliber revolver protruding from his waistband.

Hernandez’s manner was “bizarre and aggressive, and he wouldn’t comply” with orders, said LAPD spokesman Mike Partain. Officers fired rounds of a non-lethal projectile at Hernandez that struck him but had no effect, police said.

Hernandez then brandished the gun and Officer Wai Hong Wong, 29, fired three rounds, one hitting Hernandez in the arm.

Hernandez was taken to Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, where he was treated for the wound. Hernandez was to be booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.
