Video Store’s OK Upheld Despite Neighbors Pleas

A Blockbuster video store will be built at Chapman Avenue and State College Boulevard, despite complaints from nearby residents.

The owner of the commercial property where the business will be built said he expects plans to be drawn within three months and construction to begin soon after.

Residents who live behind the property, next to a Coco’s restaurant, had asked the City Council to overturn a recent Planning Commission decision that permitted the property owner to build the Blockbuster business. They said the business would block the views of some of the neighbors on Sycamore Avenue and increase traffic at Chapman and State College.

The City Council on Tuesday denied their appeal by upholding the Planning Commission’s decision.

Council members said the commercial property was there before the residents bought their homes and the commercial property owner had the right to develop.

“It’s not a comfortable mix, but that’s the way it is,” Mayor Chris Norby said about the residential area’s proximity to the commercial land.
