Voters OK Continuation of Landscaping Tax

Property owners in a mail-in election have overwhelmingly approved the continuation of a $1.2-million assessment to pay for maintenance of streets and trees.

When the votes were tallied this week, those who pay $251,732 of the assessment favored its reinstatement while those paying $108,695 opposed it, City Clerk Jane Berry said.

The election’s outcome means the owners of a typical West Covina home will continue to pay a $46 annual fee on their property taxes for the assessment.

About a quarter of the city’s 26,000 property owners voted in the election. Ballots were counted Tuesday.

Balloting in such elections is limited to property owners and votes are weighted by how much assessment the owner would pay.

The assessment passed despite opposition from two of the biggest landowners, the West Covina Unified School District and Covina Valley Unified School District.
