The families of 13 people from across the country--including several from Southern California--who died aboard TWA Flight 800 have filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court against the airline, claiming it is responsible for their deaths.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, seeks unspecified general and punitive damages.

The plaintiffs also sued Boeing, which manufactured the plane; and Crane Co., Lear Romac and Burbank-based Hydro-Aire, which built fuel pumps and fuel system components, among other things.

TWA officials could not be reached for comment.

An attorney representing some of the plaintiffs said the litigation will eventually end up in U.S. District Court in New York.

Those who filed suit include the family of Newport Beach resident William Story, the 51-year-old chief executive officer of Nation American Insurance Cos.

The victims of the crash lived across the country, but their families can sue in California because the defendants do business here, said a spokeswoman for the plaintiffs’ lawyer.
