Bernard Gilkey hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning Saturday that gave the New York Mets a 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

“I’ve been hitting a lot of long shots in the ballpark and they’ve been getting caught,” Gilkey said. “I wanted to make sure that no one was going to get this one.”

Gilkey has 16 runs batted in during his last 22 games.

The Mets were fortunate that Gilkey batted in the eighth.

Brett Tomko (5-3), who relieved starter Pete Schourek, gave up a bloop single to Rey Ordonez to start the inning. Two outs later, Edgardo Alfonzo hit a ball foul down the left-field line that Deion Sanders dropped near the stands.

Alfonzo then singled before Gilkey hit Tomko’s first pitch for his second home run in three games.

Met starter Rick Reed (7-4) gave up six hits in eight innings and hit his first career home run.
