After a wonderful day on the northern Sonoma County coast, we stopped by Rochioli Vineyards on our way home. The 1994 Chardonnay from their South River Block is experimental; only about 45 cases were made. I was shocked to find out that it was made with 100% malolactic fermentation and all new oak. Normally, I shy away from Chardonnays made in this style, but in this case, the fruit was simply complemented, seasoned and somehow framed by the oak. It’s hard to describe the incredible refreshing elegance of this wine. It’s simply one of the finest California Chardonnays I’ve ever tasted.
