Monsoonal Moisture Brings Rare Summer Sprinkle to the County

Share

It wasn’t exactly a deluge, but monsoonal moisture pushing up from the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday dropped a rare summer sprinkle on parts of Ventura County.

“It’s not unusual to see this type of pattern in Phoenix or Las Vegas this time of year, but for moisture to make it into the area, well, it happens, but it’s unusual,” said John Sherwin, a meteorologist with the private forecasting company WeatherData Inc.

Widespread showers were reported throughout the county, including Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura, but possible thunderstorms did not materialize because of the heavy cloud cover.

Precipitation amounts were minuscule, just enough to dampen roads and paved parking lots. Simi Valley reported the most rain, with all of 0.01 of an inch, and traces of moisture made it to the ground in Ventura, Oxnard and Point Mugu, Sherwin said.

Slick streets contributed to one minor fender bender in Oxnard, police said.

Today’s forecast calls for a return to seasonal dryness, with sunshine and high clouds predominating, Sherwin said.
