Intruder Won’t Be Prosecuted for Seeking to Sleep in O.J. Simpson’s Guest Cottage
O.J. Simpson confronted an alleged intruder at the front door of his Brentwood estate who was detained by security guards and later arrested by LAPD officers, police said.
As police were leading the intruder away at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, he told officers that he was looking for Brian “Kato” Kaelin’s guest cottage, “so I can get some sleep,” authorities said.
Steven Murata, 36, of Anaheim was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, but was later released. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office declined to file charges because of lack of evidence.
Murata had scaled an eight-foot wall surrounding Simpson’s mansion, triggering a burglar alarm that awakened Simpson, said LAPD spokesman Jason Lee.
“While Mr. Simpson went to see what caused the disturbance, he observed the suspect walking to the front of his house,” Lee said. “Mr. Simpson opened his front door and advised the suspect to leave the premises.”
The suspect complied, and he was leaving the property when he was detained by a security officer hired by Simpson.
