John Hines; Episcopal Leader Started Divestiture Movement
John Elbridge Hines, 86, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church from 1965 to 1974. He was strongly identified with the civil rights movement both in the United States and elsewhere. In 1971, at a General Motors shareholders meeting, Hines initiated the movement to divest American institutions of interests in South Africa, then a bastion of apartheid. He also helped open Episcopal clerical ranks to women and blacks. He is survived by four sons and a daughter. On Saturday in Austin, Tex., of complications from a stroke.
