Magic Johnson Camp to Begin Sunday

As many as 525 Magic Johnson wannabes will flood Cal Lutheran University on Sunday for a basketball camp run by the NBA legend.

Boys and girls ages 9 to 17, from as far away as Japan, France and Australia, will take part in the 16th annual Magic Johnson All-Star Basketball Camp, which runs Sunday through Thursday, said Detra Jones, camp director.

“One of the premiere basketball players in history is teaching this camp,” she said.

“He’s had this camp for many years and takes an active role in it.”

To accommodate everyone, campus parking lots will be turned into makeshift basketball courts and dormitory rooms will be prepared for the 75% of the campers who will stay overnight. Most of the 500 slots have already been filled, Jones said.

Johnson led the Lakers to five NBA championships, earning the Finals MVP award three times and the NBA All-Star Game MVP twice.

Legendary former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden and former Pepperdine University basketball coach Jim Harrick held basketball camps there before Johnson, said Lynda Fulford, school spokeswoman.
