Demotions of Six Police Supervisors Are Delayed

Demotions of six supervisors with the South Pasadena Police Department are being delayed until next month while the city manager discusses their impact on the force with police labor representatives, officials said.

Three police lieutenants and three sergeants were told they had until July 3 to agree to a lower rank and a pay cut as part of an effort to shift more officers onto the streets and streamline management.

City Manager Sean Joyce said he met with officials from the South Pasadena Police Officers Assn. this week and another meeting is planned for next week.

Joyce declined to say whether the demotions would proceed. He said the reductions in rank were recommended on the basis of years of service and are not related to merit.

Among those facing demotions are the department’s two top women officers. Lt. Joyce Ezzell would become a sergeant and Sgt. Diane Wheeless would return to the ranks.
