Pierce Classes Combine Computers, Planning

Share

Two night courses in geographic information systems, designed to teach planners about using computers to determine where best to locate new projects, will be added to the Pierce College curriculum in the fall.

Geographic information systems, one of the fastest-growing applications of computer technology, uses demographic and economic data to determine prime locations for commercial developments, schools or hospitals, said Gail Hobbs, Pierce geography instructor.

The maps created with the system also can be used to determine delivery and emergency vehicle response routes, she said, and real estate agents can use them to locate houses for clients.

Hobbs, a member of the executive committee of the National Council for Geographic Education, was one of 25 educators to participate in the National Science Foundation project to train community college instructors in the techniques.

The courses, “Introduction to Geographic Information Systems” and “Geographic Information Systems Applications,” will each last eight weeks and have a $39 fee.

The three-unit introductory class will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Aug. 18. The three-unit advanced class will meet from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Oct. 14.
