No Fall in Sight for Unseasonal Temperatures

Unusually dry and hot weather prompted thousands of people to spend the first day of November at the beach, and forecasters said the simmering conditions would continue today.

Santa Ana recorded a high of 93 degrees Saturday--well below the 101-degree record set in 1969, said Will Etheredge with WeatherData Inc., which provides forecasts to The Times.

A Santa Ana condition is allowing hot winds in from the northeast and blocking out cooling offshore breezes, Etheredge said.

Lifeguards reported unusually large crowds at beaches. Huntington City Beach drew an estimated 15,000 visitors Saturday, five times more than a normal autumn weekend.

“We’ve had a lot of people all day long,” said lifeguard Matt Karl. “The weather is warm, and the water is warm, as well.”

The ocean water was 68 degrees Saturday--several degrees above the normal autumn temperature, Karl said. Etheredge said the warm water was probably related to the El Nino weather condition.

Temperatures are expected to hit the mid 80s along the coast today and the low 90s inland.
