Maybe they should call him “Bull” Durham.

Glendale College rode the power running of tailback Darrell Durham to its first victory of the season Saturday, defeating Ventura, 35-23, in a Western State Conference Northern Division game at Glendale High.

Durham, a 205-pound freshman from Gardena High, rushed for four touchdowns and a season-high 275 yards in 37 carries, and made the big plays down the stretch.

Durham scored three times in the fourth quarter, breaking loose for touchdown runs of eight, 35 and 64 yards to help Glendale (1-6, 1-1 in conference play) rally from a 14-12 halftime deficit and pull away from a Pirate team that was coming off its first victory a week ago.

“Oh my God, Darrell had a great game today,” Glendale Coach John Cicuto said. “I’m elated. It was like a championship game.”

Ventura (1-6, 1-1) hurt its chances by losing four second-half fumbles, including three in the fourth quarter when the Pirates tried to rally.

The Vaqueros took the lead for good, 15-14, on Ed Melgar’s 32-yard field goal late in the third quarter.
