Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital kicked off its yearlong 80th birthday party Monday with a celebration that featured vintage cars, 1918 menu prices and patients from the past, including one who said he owed not only his life to the hospital, but his wife as well.

James Ramsey, 78, was on hand for the hospital’s “Eighty Years--A History of Healing,” and he thanked the people of the facility for saving him from a deadly infection in 1932 and allowing him to meet the woman who would become his wife 16 years later.

“I was at the hospital for an alumni patient reunion and I saw this beautiful woman being fitted for a brace,” said Ramsey. “I said to myself, ‘This is it,’ and now we have been married 49 years.”

The celebration included a vintage fashion show featuring 1920s dresses, a band that played music from the ‘20s and a photographic exhibition of the hospital’s history.
