Live-Work Tenants in Artists Village OKd

To promote the downtown Artists Village, the City Council has granted final approval for an ordinance that will allow some artists to live in their work studios.

City officials believe the arrangements, known as live-work spaces, will be an integral part of forming an artists enclave.

The measure passed 4 to 2 this week, with council members Ted R. Moreno and Tony Espinoza, frequent critics of the Artists Village, dissenting.

Under the code, a live-work space will be at least 750 square feet. At least 220 square feet will be required for living space, including a separate bathroom and kitchen.

The Artists Village is a mixture of private galleries and proposed public buildings that officials hope will revitalize part of downtown.

Downtown project manager Susan Jones-Helper said no live-work plans have yet been submitted to the city.
