‘Mystery!,’ ‘Masterpiece’ and a Little Shakespeare on PBS

The British are coming to the small screen this weekend, highlighted by new installments of PBS’ “Mystery!” and “Masterpiece Theatre.”

Colin Salmon of “Prime Suspect II” fame stars in the latest “Mystery!” entry, “Deep Secrets,” today at 9 p.m. on KCET-TV Channel 28. He plays a detective who decides the best way to get to a mobster is through his ex-wife (Amanda Donohoe).

Jemma Redgrave returns as physician Eleanor Bramwell in the third season of the “Masterpiece Theatre” series “Bramwell,” Sunday at 9 p.m. on Channel 28. In the first of four new episodes, Dr. Bramwell meets a 12-year-old prostitute while working at a hospital in Victorian-era London.

For those who want to brush up on Shakespeare, PBS’ “Great Performances,” today at 10:30 p.m. on Channel 28, chronicles the opening night performance of the Bard’s “Henry V” at Shakespeare’s Globe in London. Mark Rylance, the theater’s artistic director, stars as Hal.

Today

U2, the Spice Girls, Aerosmith, Jon Bon Jovi and the Backstreet Boys are scheduled to perform on “The 1997 MTV Europe Music Awards,” at 7 p.m. on MTV. The fourth annual event is telecast from Rotterdam.

Friday

“MTV Sports and Musical Festival,” at 8 p.m. on MTV, is a two-day, 10-hour special taped in Austin, Texas, which combines alternative sports with alternative bands. The Wu Tang Clan, Smash Mouth, Offspring, Blink 182, Everclear, Sugar Ray, Reel Big Fish and the Crystal Method are among the groups performing.

Peter Funt and Suzanne Somers host CBS’ “Candid Camera’s Battle of the Sexes,” at 8 p.m. on Channel 2. The special features fun and amusing interplay between men and women.

“Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” and her cat Salem pop up on all of ABC’s “TGIF” comedies: “Boy Meets World,” “You Wish” and “Teen Angel,” beginning at 8 p.m. on Channel 7.

Jan-Michael Vincent guests on CBS’ “Nash Bridges,” at 10 p.m. on Channel 2, as Nash’s older brother, presumed dead after the Vietnam War, but who actually may be involved in a drug war.

Saturday

Chris Evert and husband Andy Mills host “The Quest . . . Rising Above,” at 4 p.m. on Channel 2, a documentary on the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, and the lives of previous Olympic medal winners.

Heavyweight champions Evander Holyfield (WBA) and Michael Moorer (IBF) meet in a unification bout from Las Vegas on pay-per-view at 6 p.m. Three years ago, Moorer won a 12-round decision over Holyfield.

The A&E; documentary “The Girl in the Photograph,” at 7 and 11 p.m., offers a then-and-now chronicle of Vietnamese Kim Phuc, who, at age 9, was photographed after her flesh was burned by napalm. The special also includes an interview with the soldier who ordered the napalm strike.

Nickelodeon unveils its latest comedy series, “The Journey of Allen Strange,” at 9:30 p.m. Arjay Smith plays an alien, stranded on Earth, who is befriended by a teenage girl (Erin Dean) and her younger brother (Shane Sweet).

Former porn film star Traci Lords joins the cast of NBC’s “Profiler,” at 10 p.m on Channel 4, as a parolee who becomes friends with Sam’s nemesis.

Sunday

Mark Hamill hosts A&E;’s two-hour documentary “Hollywood Aliens and Monsters: A Century of Science Fiction Cinema,” at 5 and 9 p.m.

Christopher Lloyd returns as the sport-loving angel in the “Wonderful World of Disney” movie “Angels in the Endzone,” at 7 p.m. on Channel 7.

PBS’ “Nature” presents “Animal Attractions: Amazing Tales From the San Diego Zoo,” at 8 p.m. on Channel 28.

E! Entertainment Television’s “Celebrity Profile” series looks at the life and career of Oscar winner Jodie Foster, at 9 p.m.

Richard Belzer guests as Detective Munch, his character on “Homicide: Life on the Street,” on Fox’s “The X-Files,” at 9 p.m. on Channel 11. The series also celebrates its 100th episode.

Kelly McGillis, Jason Gedrick and Larry Hagman star in CBS’ “The Third Twin,” at 9 p.m. on Channel 2. The four-hour thriller, based on Ken Follett’s bestseller novel, deals with a biologist (McGillis) who tracks down evidence linking a cloning experiment to a genetics company and several top-ranking politicians. The conclusion airs Tuesday at 9 p.m.

Christopher McDonald and Peter Horton head the cast of ABC’s “Into Thin Air: Death on Everest,” at 9 p.m. on Channel 7, a dramatization of Jon Krakauer’s account of the ill-fated May 1996 expedition to Mount Everest.
