Meeting to Focus on Hazardous Cleanup

Share

Residents may comment tonight on a plan to clean up a hazardous materials site on the western edge of Port Hueneme’s naval base near Hollywood Beach and Hollywood-by-the-Sea.

The 33-acre site was used as a disposal spot for as many as 40 drums of unknown chemicals, a variety of different types of fuel oil, 3,000 gallons of pesticide and other substances dating as far back as the 1950s. Hazardous waste has been found in areas ranging from surface soil to the layers below the ground-water table at the Naval Construction Battalion Center, officials said.

Officials propose to place a clay cap with ground water and soil gas monitoring devices at the site next spring to contain the toxic materials at the former training area.

The meeting on the proposed cleanup is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. at the Orvene Carpenter Community Center, 550 Park Ave., in Port Hueneme. The public has also been invited to attend the 7 p.m. meeting of the Restoration Advisory Board that oversees environmental cleanup issues at Port Hueneme and Point Mugu immediately before the hearing.
