Bruins Will Rest, but Not on Laurels

Share

UCLA is certainly more potent on offense this season than last. The Bruins scored 330 points last season and have scored 365 this year with two games left. Averaging 40.6 points a game, the Bruins are fourth in the nation in scoring, and are near the school record of 42.7 points a game set in 1973.

With that kind of offensive firepower, and with the Bruin defense holding opponents to 11 touchdowns during the team’s current seven-game winning streak, center Shawn Stuart said the temptation to become overconfident during an open date this week is real.

“But this team has really been able to focus and not look too far ahead,” Stuart said. “I really think this team is thinking about [sixth-ranked] Washington. We know that they are a great football team so we really practiced hard. We’re not going to play afraid but we are definitely not looking past them either.”

How much will the Huskies by affected by the loss of running back Rashaan Shehee, who is expected to sit out the Nov. 15 game at the Rose Bowl because of a knee injury?

“There is a reason why you have first-string and second-string,” Coach Bob Toledo said. “Any time you lose your best back, it’s going to change the way a team looks . . . but I’m sure they will be ready to play.”
