Courtyard to Be Dedicated in Memory of Soldier

The city will dedicate its City Hall Courtyard in memory of Donald Ward Evans Jr., the only resident to ever win the Medal of Honor, officials have announced.

Evans, a 1961 graduate of Covina High School who served in the Vietnam War with the Army 4th Infantry Division, was killed during combat in 1967 as he rescued wounded comrades under heavy enemy fire, city officials said.

Disregarding his own wounds, “Evans continued to drag men to safety and treat those he could not move until he was killed,” according to a press release. This is the second time the city has honored Evans, who was among 20 Covina veterans memorialized in 1995. The dedication will take place Nov. 8, at 10 a.m.
