A Los Angeles police sergeant was accidentally shot in the leg while arresting an armed 63-year-old man, police said Friday.

Sgt. Robert McDonald, 37, was wounded in his left calf when the suspect’s gun discharged about 10 p.m. Thursday in the 5300 block of Russell Avenue, said Los Angeles police spokeswoman Helen Lloyd.

McDonald, checking a “shots fired” call, saw Stanford Schroeder with a semiautomatic pistol, Lloyd said.
