Brendan Shanahan’s short-handed goal with 50.6 seconds left in regulation stopped Pittsburgh rookie Peter Skudra’s bid for a shutout in his first NHL start Friday night as the Red Wings and Penguins tied, 1-1, at Detroit.

Pittsburgh seemingly had the win wrapped up when Alexei Morozov broke a scoreless tie midway through the third period and Detroit captain Steve Yzerman was sent off for high sticking with just 1:13 remaining. But Shanahan intercepted a clearing attempt by Skudra at the left circle, spun around and fired the only shot that beat the rookie all night.

Skudra stopped 23 shots in his second NHL appearance. He made his debut Wednesday in relief of Ken Wregget during a loss to Dallas.

New York Islanders 3, Carolina 2--After three consecutive losing seasons, the Islanders are showing signs that they may be headed for a reversal of fortune.

“We believe we have a great team. We know we do, and tonight’s game is a good example. Maybe last year we don’t win this game,” Claude Lapointe said after his game-winning goal with 1:45 remaining.

New York extended its unbeaten streak to five games by overcoming a strong performance by Carolina goaltender Trevor Kidd at Greensboro, N.C.

Dallas 2, New York Rangers 2--Wayne Gretzky’s goal with 7:08 remaining lifted the Rangers to a tie at Dallas.

The Stars’ defense had limited the Rangers to 12 shots and Dallas seemed headed for its second victory over New York in 11 days. But Gretzky jumped on a loose puck in front of the net that goaltender Ed Belfour failed to control.

Montreal 4, San Jose 3--Martin Rucinsky scored with 1:30 remaining in regulation to lead the Canadiens at San Jose.

The Sharks had tied it, 3-3, when defenseman Todd Gill scored a power-play goal at 2:47 of the third period. Montreal has lost once in six road games.
