Sex Club’s Zoning
Re the L.A. City Council permitting a Hollywood gay sex club to remain open in a residential area near an elementary school, Nov. 6:
Last summer, The Times reported that the City Council denied a permit to an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in the Hancock Park section of Los Angeles. In essence, children going to school in Hollywood walking past an establishment where men engage in sodomy and oral copulation--this is acceptable. Children going to school in Hancock Park walking past a place where a quorum (greater than 10) of men engage in the prayer and worship of G-d--this is not acceptable.
To be sure, Hollywood neighborhood groups do not have the political or financial clout of the Hancock Park Homeowner’s Assn. Nevertheless, the members of the City Council are the elected representatives of the city of Los Angeles. Their decisions reflect the predominant values and priorities of the people of this city. So if anyone has a problem with this decision--look in the mirror, first.
