Relocation Funds for 2 Fire Victims Sought

Share

A fund has been started at Laura’s House for two women who left the battered women’s shelter a year ago and lost all their possessions in a fire last week at their Orange County apartment complex.

“They are both homeless because of the fire,” said Sandy Condello, executive director and co-founder of the shelter. “It’s amazing how resilient they can be if they have to be.”

The women, whose names have been withheld for safety reasons, work part time at the shelter’s thrift shop. One of the women has two children, the other four.

The fire apparently was started by a candle in a unit of the complex.

A child of one of the women “asked if I would give her a job so she could help out her mother,” Condello remarked, “and I said, ‘Honey, I can’t, you are only 12.’ ”

Donations are sought to help relocate the women. The donations can be mailed to Laura’s House, 97 Calle de Industrias, San Clemente 92672. Information: (714) 361-3775.
