Huskies’ Huard to Start Against Bruins

Share

After a week off because of a sprained ankle, Washington quarterback Brock Huard will start Saturday’s game against UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

Huskies’ Coach Jim Lambright made the announcement Monday and added that Huard probably could have played in Washington’s 31-28 loss to Oregon on Saturday.

“I won’t play a player who won’t give me productivity without concern for his injury,” Lambright said. “He was 80% and that wasn’t enough for him to operate efficiently.”

Without Huard, the nation’s most efficient college quarterback, according to NCAA statistics, the Huskies went with freshman Marques Tuiasosopo, son of former UCLA defensive tackle Manu Tuiasosopo.

Tuiasosopo threw for 261 yards and a touchdown, but also threw an interception. Washington ran 15 deep pass routes, and he hit three of the receivers, though he had some balls dropped.

He ran for 95 yards, but often because he made hasty judgments that a play had broken down when there was still time for it to develop.

Washington will have Huard, but will not have Rashaan Sheehee, its top running back who partially tore a knee ligament a week ago against USC. Maurice Shaw and Jason Harris, from Bishop Amat High, are the backups.

Giving in to the rain, UCLA practiced in the old men’s gym building on campus for the first time in several years.

“With the work we did last week, this won’t hurt us,” said Coach Bob Toledo, referring to the Bruins’ open date last Saturday that gave them an extra week to prepare for Washington.

UCLA probably will return to Spaulding Field for practice today.

Tuiasosopo has a sister, Leslie, at Washington, playing on the volleyball team.
