Four people were injured, one of them seriously, when a garbage truck lost a tire and crashed into a concrete divider on the San Bernardino Freeway, triggering a wreck on the opposite side of the freeway that involved two cars, the CHP said.
The cars apparently ran into a portion of the garbage truck that flew into their path after it was dislodged during the impact of the crash, authorities said.
The driver of one of the cars, Gustavo Juarez of Rancho Cucamonga, was seriously injured and was taken by helicopter to Harbor-UCLA hospital in Torrance, said CHP spokesman Richard Perez.
Juarez’s passenger, Thomas Daly, 34, also of Rancho Cucamonga, and Rosa Bravo, 23, of Palmdale, the driver of the second car, were treated for minor injuries. The truck driver Jose Pena, 45, of La Puente suffered minor injuries.
The 1:30 p.m. accident, which occurred at the Crossroads Parkway exit, shut down the westbound side of the freeway for two hours, the CHP said.
