Los Angeles police were searching Wednesday for a motorist who shot at a man, injured a woman and killed a dog while fleeing from a traffic accident he caused. His female passenger also escaped, police said.

The accident occurred at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday at Chase Street and Lennox Avenue when the motorist rear-ended another car. No one was injured in the crash, police said.

The motorist then tried to flee, said Lt. Bob Tumas, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman. When the other driver confronted him, the motorist drew a 9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun and fired several times, missing the driver and hitting a female passerby. She suffered a superficial wound and was not seriously harmed, police said.

Followed by his female passenger, the gunman jumped over a fence at a nearby house and shot two dogs in the backyard, wounding one and killing the other, Tumas said. Police have not identified the two suspects, nor have they identified the owner of the other car.

Authorities described the assailant as a white man, 30 to 35 years old, weighing 180 pounds and standing 5-foot-9. They asked that anyone with information about the incident call LAPD detectives at (818) 756-8371.
