FRESHWATER

17. CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass and striped bass very active. Mike Carpenter, Canyon Country, 35 largemouth bass to 9 1/2 pounds, on Wham Fisheze. Eric Cole, Lancaster, in three outings caught 10 stripers, largest 15 pounds, on AC plugs. His father, Allan, in one outing, caught stripers at 14-11 and 11 pounds. Several similar striper catches.

18. LAKE PIRU--Trollers using Rapalas and Needlefish at 15-20 feet doing OK for trout, but limits are hard to come by. Bass fishermen scratching to catch an occasional largemouth, with night crawlers at east end best bet.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Lots of striped bass (caught mostly on live shad and anchovies), smallmouth bass (spinnerbaits and plastics) and crappie and bluegill (mealworms in marina). Top catch, an eight-pound striper by Tim Wilson, Lancaster.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Red-ear perch best bet, but a few sizable largemouth bass have been caught. Doug Hamilton, La Crescenta, 9 1/2-pound bass, on crawdad in Cachuma Bay. John Stopp, Apple Valley, five-pound bass, on crawdad in Cachuma. Trout still sluggish.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Top bass 10 pounds 1 ounce by Ed Guyette, Ventura, on crawdad from shore. Terry Baker, Ventura, 9 1/2- and 8 1/2-pound bass, on crawdads. Lots of smaller bass biting in shallows. Catfish bite still steady. Leonard Gibson, Oak View, 15-pound catfish, on mackerel at 50 feet. Trout bite fair at Coyote Ramp, with Power Bait and small lures getting some limits.

22. CORONA LAKE--Trout biting best early mornings, sporadically during day. Shore fishermen should arrive early to stake out a spot near the dam, which is where most of the fish are being caught. Some catfish.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Trout from one to 10 pounds being caught nearly every day. Lots of limits, and the fishing will get better with the cooler weather. Power Bait best.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Last week a 9-pound 5-ounce rainbow topped the list. This week one 9-3 does. Harry Serkizyan, Los Angeles, used a gold Rapala to land it. Lots of limits of smaller trout.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish averaging two-four pounds continue to snack on mackerel, and lake staff continues to provide more catfish. Another plant was made Thursday. Largemouth bass have stopped biting, for the most part, anyway. A few large bluegill are showing--and being caught--beneath the docks.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Lots of small stripers showing at the scales, but the larger fish are beginning to stir. Matt Steffan, Temecula, 12-pound striper, on Hopkins spoon at dam. Catfish very active. A trio of anglers, using chicken livers, filled a stinger that weighed 50 pounds. Trout action picking up slightly.

27. LAKE PERRIS--A 13 1/2-pound bass was caught last week by Robert Barnhill, Riverside, on a purple plastic worm at west side of island. Mark Porter, Riverside, caught an 11-pound 8-ounce bass, also on a purple plastic, at south side of island. Trout bite good on Power Bait. Lots of limits of pan-sized fish.

28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--El Capitan and Hodges have fair bass bites in progress, with Hodges yielding the biggest, a nine-pounder by Gregory Mallory, Murrieta, on a crawdad at narrows. Murray and Miramar offering decent trout fishing, with night crawlers accounting for most limits and fish to about four pounds. Hodges is the best place for catfish, but practically everybody there is fishing for bass.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Fishing is slow, blamed on 51-degree water. A few trout are taking inflated night crawlers.

30. BIG BEAR LAKE--A 9-3 rainbow, caught on Sierra Gold, was weighed in at Bear Mt. Junior Market before the rain and snow began to fall earlier this week. Lots of limits of smaller trout were reported as well. But the season is fast nearing an end.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Largemouth bass active at dam, being caught by those jigging with spoons at 40-45 feet. Lots of catfish. Largest, a nine-pounder caught on mackerel at spillway. Crappie bite OK at times in marina area.
