Ground-Breaking Held for Middle School

The county’s fastest-growing school district broke ground this week on a middle school set to open in the fall of 1998.

Capistrano Unified School District officials gathered Thursday at the site of the planned Bernice Ayer Middle School, named after the city’s first schoolteacher. The district is the county’s third-largest and has opened three schools this year alone.

Ayer, who died in 1994, was hired by the city’s founder, Ole Hanson, in 1925 to teach at the first school. At that time, classes were held inside a tiny home at 147 Avenida Sierra.

The new school--for grades six through eight--will be across from Truman Benedict Elementary School.
