Winchell’s Appoints President-CEO

* Tom Dowling has been named president and chief executive of the Santa Ana-based Winchell’s doughnut chain. A 25-year veteran of the food-service industry, Dowling most recently served as corporate vice president for Service America, a company that provides food and vending services. Before that he was a Baskin-Robbins executive.

* Larry Elcheson has been named to the newly created position of senior vice president of new business units for Ingram Micro Inc., a Santa Ana wholesale distributor of technology products and services. He had been president of Ingram Micro Asia-Pacific, and before that of Ingram Micro Canada.

* Sanford D. Coggins has been appointed business development manager for Merrill Lynch’s Southern California Partnership for Economic Achievement. The partnership is a three-year, $77-million pilot program to create financial opportunities for ethnically diverse communities in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Coggins, an assistant vice president and financial consultant in the Newport Beach office, has been with Merrill Lynch since 1988.

* Jim Gentz has been named president of Cypress-based Yamaha Motor Corp. USA’s Motorsports Group. He had been senior vice president. In addition, Dennis McNeal was appointed general manager of the group.

* Richard K. Hayes has joined Perigon Medical Distribution Corp. in Laguna Hills as vice president, human resources. He was formerly corporate director, field human resources at Apria Healthcare Group Inc. Hayes has also been human relations manager of TRW Information Services and human resource representative with Allstate Insurance Co.

* J. Bruce Totty has been named vice president, corporate marketing and sales for Irvine Sensors Corp. in Costa Mesa. He joined the company as manager of R&D; business development in 1994, and has since held various marketing positions. Before joining Irvine Sensors, Totty held marketing management positions at Harris Corp. and General Motors Hughes Electronics.

* David Zak has been appointed chief operating officer of Koll Bren Realty Advisors in Newport Beach. He joined the company in 1994 as managing director of the Mortgage Asset Management Services Group.

* John P. Murray has been appointed president, chief executive and member of the board of MicroSensors Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Irvine Sensors Corp. in Costa Mesa. Murray was previously senior vice president and general manager of Linkatel Pacific, a joint venture of the Providence (R.I.) Journal and Time Warner.

* Todd Coleman has joined Thomas P. Cox Architects Inc. in Irvine as a senior designer. Coleman was formerly a senior designer at JBZ Dorius and a designer and architect at Arlo Brown & Associates in Denver.

* Fritz Doss has been named executive chef for the Hyatt Newporter hotel in Newport Beach. Doss, who has been with Hyatt Hotels Corp. for more than 12 years, was previously chef at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

* April Kemp has joined the general contracting company of McCarthy in Newport Beach as marketing coordinator. She had been office manager at a Santa Ana law firm for eight years.

* Dave Tobey has been named national sales manager-dental products for Premier Laser Systems Inc. in Irvine. Tobey previously served as director of sales and marketing for Patient Care Medical Sales and was national director of managed care programs at G.D. Searle in Skokie, Ill.

* David D. Chapman has been admitted as a partner in the certified public accounting firm of Haskell & White LLP in Newport Beach. He is director of real estate consulting services. Before joining the firm, Chapman was principal of Land Feasibility Consultants, a Newport Beach firm specializing in market and financial analysis of master-planned communities.

* Michael S. Barnett has been appointed vice president of Loan Administration Network Inc., a Newport Beach real estate management company. He will be in charge of the builder loan services division. Before joining Loan Administration, Barnett was in charge of the builder division of Keros Mozilo Mortgage Bankers in Pasadena and the construction department of Western Financial Bank in Irvine.

* James McPhail has been named corporate attorney for HomeBase Inc., the Irvine home improvement warehouse chain. He was formerly a staff attorney at GTE California Inc. in Thousand Oaks.

* Robert O. Sweeney has been named controller for Rockford Industries Inc. in Santa Ana. He was previously business systems analyst with Citicorp N.A.-Equipment Finance and Leasing, and before that was controller of New York-based Sequa Capital Corp.

* William J. Thormahlen has been appointed managing director of the Sares-Regis Group in Irvine. He was formerly executive vice president, chief financial officer and principal of the commercial and residential construction, development and management company.
