Thousands of musical shorts were made between 1929 and 1941 by the movie studios as a way to test new talent, but most of the films have not survived. Fifteen that did make up “Hollywood Rhythm: Paramount Musical Shorts, 1929-1941,” screening at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Included are “St. Louis Blues” (1929) with jazz and blues legend Bessie Smith in her only film appearance; “Be Like Me” (1931) with Ethel Merman; and “Rhapsody in Black and Blue” (1932) starring a leopard-skin-clad Louis Armstrong.
