FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Striped bass providing most action, with AC plugs accounting for 13-pounders by Jim Allen, Canoga Park; Allan Cole, Lancaster and Eric Olson, Valencia. Trout bite fair in lower reservoir. Frank Cioffi, Canoga Park, stringer of trout totaling seven pounds, on mini-jigs.

LAKE PIRU--The trout-stocking truck has been here four consecutive weeks and trout fishermen are filling stringers after trolling brightly colored Rapalas and pearl colored Needlefish between the marina and dam. Some bass, bluegills and catfish.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass have moved deeper, but that isn’t keeping them from being caught. Drifting with anchovies fished at about 30 feet is the most productive method, though a 13-pounder was caught by Jack Downs, Lancaster, on a Kastmaster. Anchovies are also the hot bait for catfish. Some crappies and bluegills.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout bite picking up for trollers using Needlefish lures, and shore fishermen using night crawlers. Trout from Mt. Lassen hatchery today will improve things. Red-ear perch biting at 40 feet in Cachuma Bay.

LAKE CASITAS--Duane Styles, Port Hueneme, 11 1/4-pound bass, on Castaic Trout lure. Crawdads have produced a few in the 10-pound range. Plastic worms and crankbaits are getting smaller fish at about 20 feet. Tim Begg, Oak View, 15 crappie averaging two pounds, on chrome Kastmaster lure fished in weeds. Mt. Lassen trout plant due today.

CORONA LAKE--Top trout 7 pounds 1 ounce by Bob Vigal, Huntington Beach, on Fenwick Finesse lure. Trollers in late afternoons doing best. Crappie bite fair as well. Some hybrid striped bass and catfish.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Lots of trout limits. Top stringer, 21 pounds by Jeremy LaPointe, Garden Grove, on Kastmaster at Bubble Hole.

IRVINE LAKE--Weekly fax says all species are on an all-out feed, which usually means the fishing is fair to good. A lot of nice trout are being pulled out, though, with an eight-pounder by Mort Appleton, Laguna Hills, topping the list. Appleton used an inflated night crawler on his last cast as he neared the boat dock. Largemouth bass and crappie also are being targeted.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish responded to recent rain by getting off the bottom to feed on chunks of mackerel with hooks in them. Lots of fish from two-five pounds. Jason Preston, San Clemente, caught an 18-pounder at the inlet. Lake will close Nov. 25-27 while it is being stocked with trout for the Nov. 28 opener.

LAKE SKINNER--The recent planting of trout has perked up the striped bass. Ken Francis, San Diego, used a custom trout lure and caught a 22-pound striper. Smaller fish prefer anchovies and chicken livers. Trout that aren’t being devoured by stripers are being targeted by fishermen using mini-jigs and Power Bait. Some bass and catfish.

LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass bite fairly steady at islands, with plastic worms, night crawlers and mudsuckers. No big fish. Some trout.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Not a lot of activity, but a 5 1/2-pound largemouth bass was caught, along with several smaller bass, on plastics, crankbaits and jigs. Crappie action early mornings only. Catfish have gone deep.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Days are in 40s and nights are in teens, but the fish love it. Lots of trout limits for those braving the elements and trolling Rapalas and such. Public ramps close Dec. 1.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Miramar trout bite is fair, most anglers catching at least a couple of fish and some filling their limits in as little as an hour. Night crawlers and Power Bait best. El Capitan and Hodges are producing bass, Hodges getting the nod in quantity and size of fish. A 10-pounder was caught on a crankbait.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Not worth the trip. Lake ranger jokingly lists dynamite as top bait.
