Devils Set a Record in Victory

The New Jersey Devils won a team-record eighth consecutive game as Bobby Holik scored two goals in a 5-1 victory over the visiting New York Islanders.

Martin Brodeur had 27 saves in winning his 12th consecutive game, a team record, and posting a league-high 15th victory.

San Jose 3, Philadelphia 0--Goalie Mike Vernon stopped 28 shots and Doug Bodger scored two unassisted goals at Philadelphia in the Sharks’ victory.

In other news, the Sharks obtained Mike Ricci from the Colorado Avalanche for Shean Donovan in a trade of forwards.

Pittsburgh 2, Ottawa 0--Tom Barrasso made 27 saves to post his 26th career shutout as the visiting Penguins extended the Senators’ winless streak to seven games.

Calgary 2, Florida 1--Tommy Albelin scored an unassisted goal early in the third period as the Flames ended a nine-game winless and earned their first road victory.

Buffalo 5, Boston 0--Dominik Hasek stopped 29 shots and Miroslav Satan had two goals at Boston as the Sabres beat the Bruins.

Edmonton 3, St. Louis 0--Curtis Joseph stopped 22 shots at St. Louis as the Oilers ended a 10-game winless streak.

Vancouver 4, Phoenix 2--Dana Murzyn scored the game-winning goal against the visiting Coyotes as the Canucks improved to 2-0-1 under Coach Mike Keenan.

One day after declaring a truce with USA Hockey, the St. Louis Blues’ Brett Hull renewed his push to get unsigned New Jersey Devil forward Bill Guerin on the Olympic team, saying, “I’m not taking three weeks out of my life to play with an inferior team.” . . . Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy, doubtful tonight against Toronto because of a strained left shoulder, is the leading vote-getter with 37,116 votes in fan balloting for the North America team for the first NHL International Showdown on Jan. 18 at Vancouver.
