Mexico Wins Indoor Tournament

Terry Woodberry headed in an own-goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, and Mexico scored one minute into the overtime to defeat CISL America, 6-5, to win the gold medal at the first World Championship of Indoor Soccer.

Mexico scored four times in six power-play opportunities in front of 5,000 at the 4,500-seat Olympic Gymnasium Juan de La Barrera in Mexico City. The U.S. team, seeded sixth in the 12-team tournament, had one power-play chance.

Defender Doug Neely (Splash) had a team-high four blocks, and Rich Ryerson (two assists) and Thor Lee had three apiece. Ryerson also had two assists. Former Splash midfielder Raffaele Ruotolo also had an assist, his eighth in seven games, which tied the score with 9:41 left.

Ken Snow scored his second goal two minutes later for a 5-4 lead.

Brazil defeated Uruguay, 8-6, for the bronze medal.

Genoni Martinez had two goals for the Mexican team. Brett Phillips made 30 saves on 35 shot attempts for the U.S. team.
