A man who was shot to death during a confrontation with police Saturday was identified Monday as Alfredo Joe Arellano, 33, of San Clemente.

Arellano was driving a stolen car when an officer pulled him over just before 8:50 p.m., Garden Grove Police Lt. John Woods said. Arellano ran from the car to the rear of a closed restaurant in the 12100 block of Harbor Boulevard, as three officers chased him, Woods said. He was armed with a knife when he turned on the three officers, and they opened fire, Woods said.

Arellano died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

The Orange County district attorney’s office is investigating the incident, a routine procedure in officer-involved shootings. The department did not release the names of the officers involved.

County court and state records show Arellano had been convicted of robbery, burglary, car theft and drunken driving. He was also awaiting trial on a charge of resisting arrest, records show.
