El Camino College Classes Resume After Blackout

Classes at El Camino College in Torrance were back in session Monday after a power outage forced school officials to close the campus Friday and send thousands of students home.

The electrical failure occurred early Friday morning after a squirrel apparently leaped across several power lines and caused a transformer to explode, said college spokeswoman Mary Ann Keating. Southern California Edison officials reported finding a dead squirrel under the power lines, she said.

The blackout was a serious inconvenience to faculty and students, Keating said, because there are only a few weeks left in the semester.
