Landlord Who Refused to Repair Building Is Jailed

A Beverly Hills landlord who ignored a judge’s order to repair a Westlake-area apartment building was arrested at a court appearance Tuesday and taken to a cell in the Los Angeles County Jail, authorities said.

Haviv Alfassi, 51, plead guilty in July to 10 counts of violating health and safety codes at the Ford Hotel, a building he owns in the 1000 block of East 7th Street west of downtown.

City and county investigators found a variety of code infractions at the building, including broken windows and rodent and roach infestation, said Richard Bobb, head of the city attorney’s Housing Task Force. Bobb called the building “a firetrap.”

Alfassi agreed to repair the building as part of the terms of his probation, Bobb said. When the repairs were not performed, a Municipal Court judge revoked the probation and sentenced him to 90 days in jail.

Also Tuesday, the city attorney’s office brought charges against a Los Angeles woman who allegedly allowed an apartment building in the 800 block West 83rd Street to deteriorate to slum conditions.

Wanda Robinson, 42, was charged with 33 violations of the health and safety code. She is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 18.
