Where Congress Schools Its Children

Share

Bill and Hillary Clinton did. So did Mike Roos, president of LEARN, the Los Angeles school reform network. And, it seems, so do a surprisingly large number of members of Congress. More than 34% of U.S. Representatives and 50% of Senators with school-age offspring have sent at least one of their children to private schools. That is more than twice the national rate of 14.1%, according to a poll by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington think-tank that promotes school choice. Almost 9 in 10 Representatives and almost 8 in 10 Senators responded to the survey, conducted in June and July. The poll found that members of congressional committees that have direct jurisdiction over education issues were most likely to choose the private school option.
