More Behind Phillips Case?

Running back Lawrence Phillips, who was released last week by the St. Louis Rams, tested positive for a substance other than alcohol and was fined 20 times this season for various violations, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The Rams did not comment. . . . The Chicago Bears will reinstate defensive end Alonzo Spellman, three weeks after he was suspended by the team for refusing to have arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder. Spellman’s status is still clouded, however, by reports that the NFL is suspending him four games for failing to take a random steroids test. . . . Carolina wide receiver Mark Carrier will sit out three to four weeks because of a broken bone in his left hand. . . . Washington signed defensive lineman Steve Emtman, the top choice in the 1992 draft by Indianapolis. . . . Cedric Jones, the New York Giants’ oft-injured defensive end, will sit out the rest of the season because of a leg injury.
