Lending Support: That’s what friends are for. House Speaker Newt Gingrich appeared in the Valley on Wednesday to help the fund-raising efforts of his pal, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon of Santa Clarita. It’s not the first time either. Gingrich has dropped by Southern California three times to support McKeon. Nine months ago, McKeon went to bat for Gingrich, voting along with only 26 other House members against fining Gingrich $300,000 for ethical lapses.

* PAY RAISE: The Senate approved a congressional pay raise Wednesday, one day after the House OKd the pay hike. Among Valley-area congressmen, Republicans Howard “Buck” McKeon and James Rogan voted against it; Democrats Howard L. Berman, Brad Sherman and Henry A. Waxman voted for it. A17
