Robinson Eager to Firm Up Lines

Coach Larry Robinson may be closer to having at least two set lines after two games, but he is still undecided about right wing.

Center Jozef Stumpel, acquired during the off-season from Boston, has worked well with rookie Donald MacLean at left wing, but different right wingers, Glen Murray and Craig Johnson, have been teamed with them at various times.

Johnson also has been included with left wing Luc Robitaille and center Yanic Perreault, another combination that Robinson has favored.

“We haven’t really been able to play steady linemates,” Robinson said. “I think we might have found a good combination with Donald MacLean and [Stumpel]. They seem to work very, very well together. I want to start sticking to some lines.”

With goaltender Jamie Storr sidelined because of a groin injury, Robinson said he has not ruled out playing Frederic Chabot to give starter Stephane Fiset a rest. Robinson said he started Fiset on back-to-back nights at Pittsburgh and Boston because Fiset did not get much playing time during the exhibition season.

Defenseman Doug Zmolek had his first assist as a King in the team’s 6-5 loss at Boston on Thursday. Zmolek, who has two goals in two seasons with the Kings, had gone 73 games without an assist. . . . The Kings did not practice Friday. They will play the New York Rangers on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
